Insight on China Healthcare Reform Policy and its Influence on Investment

Recent research among CVCA members reveals that the healthcare industry will continue to be an area of much concern for VC/PE in 2009. Because the new healthcare reform plan will be publicized soon, CVCA held a business luncheon, “Insight on China Healthcare Reform Policy and its Influence on Investment,” on Feb. 18th, 2009.

Dr. Hongwen ZHAO, Director of the International Health Research Office, China Health Economics Institute, gave a wonderful speech about “China’s health system: its background, issues and prospects”. Dr. ZHAO introduced the health financing system, public services, and public governance transformation process as the three healthcare reforms that are now in place.  He compared the key health indicators of several countries to show the deficiencies in the present healthcare system and to predict the future of the public healthcare framework in China. At the end of the speech, he introduced the upcoming healthcare reform plan and analyzed the opportunities and challenges for the private sector.

After the speech, Dr. ZHAO discussed key issues with the audience, including public medical institution transformation, medicines, and the medical Instrument market development in China. This discussion provided the investors with precious insights about how to seek opportunities during China’s healthcare reform.
